About NetScape

Netscape was the company formed by Marc Andreessen which came out with one of the first fully functional browsers (the company was formed from many people who were working on Mosaic). Microsoft eventually countered, but before they did Netscape gained extreme popularity. In November 1998 Netscape bought out the NewHoo directory and changed its name to the Open Directory Project (DMOZ).

Today the Open Directory Project remains one of the most important directory on the web. Netscape has fallen since it was originally purchased by AOL on November 28, 1998 for 4.2 billion dollars in stock. Netscape still has a portion of its former popularity and is one of the top dozen search properties on the web. Like AOL, Netscape uses Google by default to power its results.
