What is Split Testing?
Split testing is using two separate marketing channels to compare the effectiveness of one vs the other. To do an effective pay per click A/B test you need to do it in real time and across the same network. Pay per click search engines, and Google AdWords specifically make it really easy to perform split testing.
Using Google AdWords to Split Test PPC Ads
Frequently one PPC ad will have a much higher click through rate than another. Google AdWords allows you to run multiple ads simultaneously.
You can track which ad has a higher click through rate of a couple different ads and try a new ad each week. Dropping the older ineffective ad. There is also a free tool by the name of Split Tester which helps you determine whether or not you have collected enough data to be sure of the results. I recommend ensuring that the data is at least 90 - 95% conclusive before dumping an ad.
Using Google AdWords to Split Test Landing Pages
You can use Google AdWords and create two ads within the same ad group using the same ad text. You can send each ad to a different page and test the results in real time.
General Google AdWords Split Testing Tips
Make sure that you have auto optimization off or it may throw off your results. Certain times only the best performing ads will get syndicated so if you want to test just the Google network make sure you turn auto optimization off and turn ad syndication off.
